Nowhere in the detailed timelines of the Holocaust had I seen mention of this. I needed an incident like this in 1935 as historical background in my current book. I Googled "riots Berlin 1935" and found a scholarly journal article that mentioned them. Then I happened on your posts. Like I said, invaluable to me. And eery that it was Friday -- Nov 13th, 2020 -- I finished the chapter that referenced the riots. The ...Hitler just wasn't much of a sports fan. The one sport he did like was boxing because he thought it captured the essence of the struggle for dominance over another.

I bought the Schlingenseipen biography about a year ago and just haven't read it yet, nor Metaxes. Currently reading D. MacCulloch on the history of Christianity, and T. Ansary on the history of Islam. Ansary is a real eye-opener. You are right, it was very successful theater and gave the Nazis much cover for the months and years ahead.

I was listening to a review of the Schlingenseipen biography of Bonhoeffer this morning on the most recent Mars Hill Audio (yes, I am still a subscriber) and was reminded again of what a difficult time that was for the church in Germany. Always good to hear from you.
Indeed...Hi, Leland! Always good to hear from you.

Indeed, the Nazi regime did a very good job of making sure that Berlin looked beautiful and, apparently, safe for everyone. Visitors wrote home raving about clean streets, friendly people, efficiency, etc. The 36 Olympics amounted to some of the greatest propaganda/political theater ever.

I've not read it all, but David Clay Large, "Nazi Games: The Olympics of 1936" (2007) appears to be the standard secondary source. The Games turned out to be a positive game changer for the Nazis.

Very readable and entertaining is "The Fastest Kid on the Block: The Marty Glickman Story." written by the subject. He and another Jewish kid, Sam Stoller, were told at the last moment that they would not be running for the U.S. in the 400-meter relay, as scheduled. The ostensible reason was that the relay team needed Jesse Owens' speed in order to beat the Germans. There were a lot of inconsistencies in the rationale for the change, and it's always been suspected that American Olympic officials went along with Hitler's request that the Jewish runners be replaced. According to Glickman, it was one of those things that everybody knew, but nobody could prove.Frank Bellizzihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07949066335378651585noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10020592.post-49053723268050837012011-07-27T11:14:41.842-05:002011-07-27T11:14:41.842-05:00I heard a short NPR account this morning on my way...I heard a short NPR account this morning on my way to work. Today is the 75th anniversary of the 1936Olympics in Berlin. The events in Germany were ignored and covered up during the year following your review.Leland Vhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09193219847631551978noreply@blogger.com
